What is included in the franchises category?
The franchises category includes the emissions from the operation of franchises in the reporting year. A franchise is any entity licensed to sell the reporting organization's goods or services. The franchises category should not include any emissions that are already included in scope 1 and scope 2 for the reporting organization. The scope 3 franchises category should include the scope 1 and scope 2 emissions of the franchisee.
For example, if the reporting organization does not own or operate the franchise, then they would not report emissions from a franchise in their scope 1 and 2 emissions. However, since the franchise is licensed to sell/distribute products or services from the reporting organization, the franchise's emissions from day-to-day operations should be included in the reporting organization's scope 3 emissions. Examples of sources from the franchise can include scope 1 stationary fuels, scope 1 mobile fuels, and scope 2 purchased electricity. Franchises is category 14 of scope 3.
What options are available in SIMAP for franchises data entry?
- Purchasing data: Enter dollars spent by purchasing category. You can assign any of the purchasing data categories to the franchises category. Note that purchasing data is intended to provide an order of magnitude estimate. See this page for guidance on purchasing data entry.
